the curve is not kind

in 1896 vilfredo pareto noticed that a fifth of italy held four fifths of the land. the same shape keeps coming back — in wealth, in cities, in code, in attention. value is not shared; it pools.

1896: the shape that keeps returning

the long tail pareto saw in land reappears in words, cities, and attention. value does not spread evenly; it gathers in a small head.

the vital few and the trivial many. joseph m. juran, 1951

the average is a fiction

in a power law almost nothing sits at the mean. the average user, the average outcome, the average day — they are arithmetic ghosts that rarely walk the earth. the head towers, the tail sprawls, and the middle, where the average is supposed to live, is nearly empty. to design for the average is to design for no one.

what i want you to keep

most of what you make is the long tail: the screen no one opens, the feature no one touches, the day no one remembers. that is not failure — it is the shape of things, and fighting it only spreads you thin. the work is not to do more. it is to find the vital few — the one screen, the one sentence, the one decision that carries the rest — and to pour yourself there.
